BECHUANALAND / Stellaland / Warren Expedition 1885 (27th April), envelope (227x102mm) addressed to Mrs Methuen in England. Bearing, on the reverse, six examples of the Cape 1d rose-red (SG 41) all tied by BARKLY / G. W. (AP 27) single circle datestamps. The front with a further Barkly G.W. datestamp, a large manuscript ‘6d’ and an unframed ‘Insufficiently Paid’ instructional marking (believed to be unique) struck in black with ‘Over ½ oz’ in manuscript alongside. Cape Town (AP 29), Taunton (MY 19) and Wellington (MY 19) transit / arrival backstamps. The envelope has been opened out and with some peripheral tears or crumpling, otherwise fine and in above average condition for mail from this expedition.
 
Note: Colonel Methuen served in the Warren Expedition, where he was Commanding Officer of the 1st Mounted Rifles ('Methuen's Horse').
 
This envelope is recorded in Alan Drysdall’s census of Warren Expedition mail in his article ‘A Postal History of Stellaland’ (London Philatelist 101.65, March 1992). At this date Colonel Methuen was at Setlagoli.
