1952, De La Rue composite hand-painted essay for the QE 2/6 Coronation. On shaded light grey thick card (95 x 108mm), the design background hand-painted in carmine similar to the issued design and colour within a cream border. ‘POSTAGE’ and ‘REVENUE’ to the left and right of the Queen’s portrait, the Orb, Anointing Spoon and birdy thing below, with the ‘2/6’ value twice and ‘CORONATION / 1953’ in a separate panel at base. Applied with extraordinarily finely cut out portrait of the Queen and the small crown at top, the portrait highlighted in Chinese white. Printers label applied at base of card. Glassine covering, this endorsed in pen ‘A” and ‘N/A’ (not approved). The concept for the issued stamp much the same, reduced in height and without several details. It is interesting to note that the Queen’s crown was skillfully reduced in height in order to fit the issued stamp. An extraordinary effort, magnificent and no doubt unique.
