POSTAL HISTORY 1888 (4th August), envelope addressed to Germany. Bearing 7½d in postage comprising ½d chestnut, 1d red-brown and 6d rose (SG 2, 5, 48) tied by two strikes of the Winburg ‘2’ in 16-bar numeral in brown-red. Showing a boxed ‘TE LAAT’ cachet also struck in brown-red and with a large red ‘2½d’ accountancy mark applied in Cape Town. The reverse with an unframed circular WINBURG (4 Aug) datestamp struck in brown-red, Bloemfontein (15 Aug), Cape Town (22 Aug) and Hamburg (13 Sep) transit / arrival datestamps. A very scarce instructional marking and a fine example of the 7½d per half ounce rate to Europe.
