POSTAL HISTORY 1888 (6th June), long official envelope with printed ‘ON SERVICE.’ at top and ‘From the President / of the Orange Free State.’ Addressed within the Orange Free State, the handwriting so ornate it is hard to read the name of the addressee. With an originating BLOEMFONTEIN (6 Jun) double circle datestamp at upper left and a boxed ‘TE LAAT’ cachet at upper right, both struck in red. The reverse with a fancy circular cachet ‘POST-KANTOOR / BLOEMFONTEIN / [coat-of-arms] / ORANJE-VRY-STAAT’ also struck in red. The letter was undelivered and received an unusual boxed cachet reading ‘Gepubliceerd en onaf- / gehaald’ struck in black. Two 1d red-brown adhesives (SG 2) were affixed over ‘ON SERVICE.’ (presumably the return fee as free postage no longer applied) and cancelled with a ‘27’ in 11-bar numeral canceller with a proving HOOPSTAD (23 Jun) single circle datestamp alongside. Vertical folds (one a crease) though a wonderful and most unusual item showing very scarce and rare instructional markings.
