Postal History / Griqualand West 1884 (12th November), envelope addressed to England, endorsed ‘S.S. “Roslin Castle”’. Bearing two examples of the Cape of Good Hope 1/- blue-green, each overprinted with a small ‘G’ for use in Griqualand West (SG 28). Both adhesives are tied by a single CAPE TOWN (12 Nov) squared circle datestamp. The reverse with a London (3 Dec) arrival backstamp. The flap with a fine red wax seal reading ‘Wm. ANDERSON & Co. / MERCHANTS / CAPE TOWN’. A fine and very scarce quadruple rate franking utilising the old stamps of Griqualand West.
 
Note: following the annexation of Griqualand West to the Cape Colony in 1880, the overprinted stamps were returned to Cape Town and distributed to several post offices for use as ordinary Cape stamps.
