1896 (27th August), Cape of Good Hope QV 1d chestnut postal stationery card overprinted ‘BRITISH BECHUANALAND’ in seriffed letters (H&G 5 / B&BS PC8). Although the message is headed 'Survey Camp / Palapye 19/8/96’ the imprinted stamp is cancelled with a MAFEKING (27 Aug) single circle datestamp. It appears the card was carried privately to Mafeking in the Cape where it entered the postal system and was then sent back to Mochudi in the Protectorate.

Note: it is assumed the ‘Survey Camp’ referred to the advancing railway.
