1897 (16th June), British Bechuanaland used in the Protectorate. Great Britain 1d vermilion postal stationery card overprinted for British Bechuanaland and surcharged ‘THREE HALF PENCE’ (H&G 8 / B&BS PC12). Addressed to Mafeking, the imprinted stamp is cancelled with a clear ‘390’ Barred Oval Numeral Canceller with a proving MOCHULI (16 Jun) single circle datestamp below. The reverse with a MAFEKING (16 Jun) squared circle arrival backstamp. The message confirms a reservation for seats on the Zederberg & Co coach. Very scarce proving card with the uncommon alternative spelling of Mochuli for Mochudi. |
