POSTAL HISTORY
AB3324
1892 (23rd October), British Bechuanaland used in the Protectorate. ‘Sitwell’ envelope addressed to England. Bearing a single QV Jubilee 6d purple on rose-red (SG 36) tied by a MACLOUTSI (23 Oct) single circle datestamp with a second strike alongside. The reverse with Vryburg (31 Oct), Cape Town (7 Nov), Newcastle (Nov) and Beal (Nov) backstamps. Some edge faults including a closed tear and staining at top otherwise a fine example of the 6d per half ounce letter rate to England.

Note: it is believed Macloutsi was opened in June 1891 to deal with mail from the Pioneer Column who had entered Mashonaland in July 1890. The sender, Captain William Henry Sitwell, served with the Bechuanaland Border Police and was stationed at Macloutsie 1891-93.
