1896 (26th December), large blue ‘Tamsen’ envelope addressed in his distinctive hand and sent registered to France. Endorsed ‘AR’ and with several ‘AVIS DE RECEPTION’ (Acknowledgement of Receipt) straight-line handstamps struck in blue. Bearing a total of 2/- in postage comprising 1895 3d and 1896-97 ½d, 2½d and 6d (x3) (SG 208, 216, 219, 222) all tied by ‘17’ barred triangle obliterators with a proving NYLSTROOM (26 Dec) double circle datestamp alongside and also a ‘R / Z.A.R.’ within an oval struck in black. Backstamped with a PRETORIA (27 Dec) transit and numerous Paris datestamps (18, 19 and 20 Jan 1897) where the envelope was re-addressed. An unusual franking. |
