1885 (9th October), envelope sent from the Eastern Transvaal Goldfields to Germany. Bearing a single Vurtheim 1/- yellow-green (perf 13½, SG 183a) tied by the distinctive ‘ZAR’ in concentric circles struck in grey-blue with a proving KAAPSCHE HOOP (9 Oct) single circle datestamp. Endorsed ‘Per Royal Mail S.S.’ and showing a large ‘2½d’ accountancy handstamp struck in red in Cape Town. The reverse with PRETORIA / TRANSVAAL (2 Nov), Cape Town (11 Nov) and German transit / arrival backstamps. Some adhesion on side of reverse from prior affixing, otherwise a very fine and attractive early use of the 1/- as a single franking from a scarce agency.
