MT193
1900 (presumed although not dated), two page letter headed 'Barberton / 3rd M I Corp / Dec 16th'. Commencing with 'I have got you all the stamps up to 1/- and a 2/6 but the 5/- is impossible to get here', those stamps applied below. Moving on to comments about the war itself, 'we are undergoing a second siege of Ladysmith the Boers cut up a picket of the 5th fusiliers MI 8 days ago', further 'the Boers have sworn to take it by Dingaan's day and they have not attacked yet', and 'we have only 1000 men to hold this place against 5000 Boers'. Somewhat fragile although a remarkable and intriguing first-hand account.
