1898 (23rd December), British Bechuanaland used in the Protectorate. Cape of Good Hope QV 1d chestnut postal stationery card overprinted ‘BRITISH BECHUANALAND’ in seriffed letters (H&G 5 / B&BS PC8). Addressed to Cape Town, with an additional Protectorate ½d vermilion adhesive (SG 59) tied by a KANYE (23 Dec) single circle datestamp. Cape Town (27 Dec) squared circle arrival backstamp.
Note: although this card was used in the Protectorate, the Protectorate ½d adhesive is surprisingly scarce paying the additional postage, as the British Bechuanaland ½d (SG 9) was usually employed. |
