ORANGE FREE STATE
Orange Free State
REPUBLICAN PERIOD  -  BRITISH OCCUPATION
O652
1900 Cape ‘Hope standing’ ½d green overprinted ‘ORANGE / RIVER / COLONY.’ BLOCK OF FOUR showing the variety OVERPRINT DOUBLE with one impression very underinked. Very fine or superb fresh mint with hinge remnant on one stamp, the others are unmounted. Rare. SG 133b

Note: in Orange Free State Philately Vol. 1, (p.244-5), Robert Hisey and Timothy Bartshe state two types of double overprints are found on the ½d: the first type with one light and one normal overprint (with both overlapping to some degree). The second type has one very faulty print and one normal with spacing varying from almost overlapping to considerably spaced (as in the block offered here). They further state the latter type is not a ‘kiss’ print (as suggested by Buckley & Marriott in ‘Stamps of the Orange Free State III’, p.34-8) but rather consider it a true double and the faulty print was due to very poor inking. They also suggest their rarity indicates they may emanate from a sheet where much of the overprint was not inked at all or the bad inking was confined to a small area.
