POSTAL HISTORY 1901 (15th June), Anglo-Boer War period. Censored envelope addressed to a prisoner of war at Green Point Camp, Cape Town then apparently readdressed to Winburg. Bearing a single ‘V.R.I. 1d on 1d purple (SG 113) tied by a ‘17’ in 16 bar oval with proving LADYBRAND / O.R.C (15 Jun) single circle datestamp alongside. Endorsed in manuscript ‘Prisoner of War’ in red and ‘Winburg' + initials in black. With an unusual ‘PRISONER OF WAR’ straight-line handstamp struck in black at top, a large oval ‘PASSED CENSOR, / LADYBRAND.’ struck in violet with initials in blue and a circular ‘CENSOR, / PRISONER OF WAR.’ cachet in blue. Bloemfontein (20 Jun) transit backstamp. |
