POSTAL HISTORY
AB4277
1891 (21st April), envelope addressed to Cape Town, bearing a single unappropriated die 2d lilac and black (SG 11), tied by a neat ‘555’ Barred Oval Numeral Canceller with a proving VRYBURG / BECHUANALAND (21 Apr) single circle datestamp alongside. With a G.P.O. Cape Town (28 Apr) arrival backstamp. An annotation by the receiver on the reverse indicates the sender was Ernest C. Baxter, who held several official posts, including that of Postmaster General of Bechuanaland. Band of discolouration on reverse and unobtrusive tear at top clear of the adhesive. An attractive example of the 2d per half-ounce letter rate to the Cape.
