BRITISH BECHUANALAND  -  1889-1895 CAPE ½d OVERPRINTED
AB4372
1888 Cape of Good Hope ½d grey-black overprinted ‘British Bechuanaland’ in green. Irregular BLOCK OF 50. The stamp at Row 5/1 showing MAJOR ERROR ‘British’ OMITTED.

The joined ‘G’ and ‘E’ of ‘POSTAGE’ on the basic Cape stamp at Row 5/2 confirms this is a lower right pane. This is the only known example of the ‘British’ omitted error due to a failure of the word to print (there is no trace of an albino impression) rather than due to a shift.

It is possible this is the first strike of the overprint and the missing letters were immediately noticed and corrected. Some gum creasing, otherwise superb fresh unmounted mint. RPS certificate (2007).

Ex William Frazer Rare Stamps (2003) and Brian Hurst Collection. A great Bechuanaland rarity. SG 30, 30ab
