AIR MAIL 1939 (21st August), South African Airways West Coast Service between Cape Town and Lobito, being an extension to the ‘Kalahari Feeder Service’. Envelope with printed illustration (map of southern Africa showing air routes), addressed to Mossamedes, Angola, bearing a single KGVI definitive 1½d dull blue (SG 120) tied by a PALAPYE (21 VIII) double circle datestamp. With ‘FIRST FLIGHT – WEST COAST’ straight-line cachet struck in purple. Mossâmedes (22 Aug) arrival datestamp. Some staining spots. Scarce.
 
Note: on the 21st August 1939, South African Airways started a direct service between Cape Town and Luanda via Keetmanshoop, Windhoek (where mail was transferred to a feeder plane which had arrived with mail from Johannesburg), Outjo, Mossâmedes and Lobito. Due to lack of support the service was discontinued. Ten days later World War II began.
