1893 Cape 1d carmine-red with overprint reading downwards. Showing the major variety OVERPRINT TRANSPOSED, reading ‘Bechuanaland. / British’ with small part of ‘British’ falling on the right hand perforations. Fine mint with large hinge remainder. BPA certificate (1976). Rare. SG 38c
Note: unlike the transposed overprint on the 2d (SG 39d), it appears the 1d always shows some fraction of the word British’ at right. This stamp is believed to show the maximum extent of the variety and appears almost identical to one offered on the John Inglefield-Watson sale (Spink 2007, lot 1093).
