Postal History 1894 (23rd May), Seaman’s 1d Concessionary Letter addressed to England. Bearing a single 1d rectangle (SG ) tied by an ALFRED DOCKS (23 May) single circle datestamp and cancelled with an indistinct ‘420’ Barred Oval Numeral Canceller. Endorsed at top ‘From Frank G. White HMS Penelope’ and countersigned at lower left ‘Commanding Officer / RW’. Backstamped with High Street / Tunbridge Wells (11 Jun) arrival datestamp. Some staining, otherwise a fine example of this scarce rate.
Note: this letter would have been carried by the Union Line’s R.M.S. Athenian’ sailing on the 23rd May, arriving at Southampton on the 10th June 1894. It appears the letter was sent via the civilian mails rather than the ship’s navy bag.
