1890 (25th April), envelope addressed to Germany, endorsed ‘Via Kimberley’ at upper left. Bearing 1885 ‘Vurtheim’ ½d, 1d, 2d and 4d tied by two very fine strikes of the SPELONKEN / Z.A.R. (25 Apr) squared octagon. Backstamped KLIPDAM / Z.A.R. (26 Apr) and PRETORIA / Z.A.R. (30 Apr) single circle transit and Swiss (27 and 28 Jul) arrival datestamps. A very scarce and most attractive four-colour combination paying the 7½d per half ounce rate via Cape Colony introduced on the 1st October 1888. (Trotter, Southern African Mails, p414). Superb.

Note: the Klipdam single circle was only recorded subsequent to the publication of the Putzel / Visser postmark study.
