1891 (5th October), ‘Vurtheim’ 1d postal stationery card addressed to the Cape Colony. The imprinted stamp is cancelled with a SPELONKEN / Z.A.R. (5 Oct) squared octagon datestamp. Pretoria (24 Oct) transit and Cape Town (28 Oct) transit / arrival backstamps. The message on the reverse is headed ‘Valdezia, Spelonken, Transvaal’ and signed by the Swiss missionary Henri Berthoud. Filing punch hole through address, otherwise fine and scarce.
Note: from 1875 Valdezia was the site of a Swiss mission station, established by the Mission Vaudoise (Mission Suisse dans Afrique du Sud).
