1892 (22nd February), envelope addressed to Germany, bearing five examples of the ‘Vurtheim’ 2d olive-bistre (SG 178) comprising a strip of three and two singles, one overlapping at right and subsequently damaged. All tied by fine strikes of the SPELONKEN / Z.A.R. (22 Feb) squared octagon. Pretoria (27 Feb) transit and German (19 Mar) arrival backstamps. Flap damage and some light toning, mainly confined to the reverse. Franked at double the 5d per half ounce rate to Europe (Trotter, Southern African Mails, p414). Scarce.
