1891 (6th July), envelope addressed to Germany, bearing ‘Vurtheim’ 1d carmine and 2d olive-bistre pair (SG 176, 178) tied by fine strikes of the SPELONKEN / Z.A.R. (6 Jul) squared octagon. With British period PRETORIA / TRANSVAAL (11 Jul) single circle, Cape Town (15 Jul), London (1 Aug) and Nowawes (3 Aug) transit / arrival backstamps. Franked at the 5d per half ounce rate to Europe (Trotter, Southern African Mails, p414). Scarce and attractive. |
