1940 (1st October), World War II. Stampless, censored envelope addressed to an Internment Camp in Pretoria. Endorsed at top ‘Internees Mail’ and with originating ELIM HOSPITAL (1 Oct) double circle datestamp. With ‘PASSED BY CENSOR A. / DEUR SENSOR A. GOEDGEKEUR’ unframed two-line cachet struck in violet and a small ‘2’ in triangle. The envelope was opened and resealed with a red on white censor label printed in Afrikaans. Endorsed on the flap ‘P.O. Makonde – Sibasa, via Louis Trichardt’. Very fine. (as581) £35 |
