1910 1d carmine-red. Vertical pair, major variety IMPERFORATE BETWEEN. Very fine mint. A great rarity of the Double Head issue. Clear BPA certificate (1977, then listed as SG 123a). Ex Vestey (2015, lot 39). SG 124a
Note: we have been able to trace eleven examples of this variety, eight of which are mint including four contained as one unit within a block of eight.
It is apparent from the plated pairs and differences in shade and impression, that two sheets each had one row imperforate: one sheet between rows six and seven and the other between rows nine and ten.
It is also noteworthy that four pairs (1 to 4 below) were originally adjacent.
1) Used pair, positions [57/67] on ‘ABC Dyer’ cover. Ex Gibbs (1987), Brickman (2024)
2) Mint pair, positions [58/68]. Damaged (tear, crease and thin). Ex Gibbs (1987)
3) Mint pair (offered above), positions [59/69]. BPA certificate (1977). Ex Vestey (2015)
4) Mint pair, positions [60/70]. BPA certificate (1976). Ex Besançon (2020), Gibbs ‘Cottonwood’ (June 2021, lot 38)
5) Mint pair, lower left corner marginal, positions [81/91]. Ex Sinton (1955).
6-9) Four mint pairs within a block of eight stamps. Positions [82/92-85/95]. Ex Vestey (2015)
10) Mint / used pair, positions unknown. Mint with gum, the upper stamp with postmark. Ex Uria (2012)
