1897 4d ultramarine and claret. Major variety HORIZONTAL PAIR, IMPERFORATE BETWEEN. Used with crisp sc 'REGISTERED / BULAWAYO 5 SP 01' datestamp. Torn and repaired, re-backed lower left corner. Despite its faults an attractive and EXCEPTIONALLY RARE variety. SG 70a
Note: this is the most rare of all BSA Company imperforate varieties. A single sheet known, resulting in six such pairs possible. A mint pair of this ex. the 'County' collection, and with this pair, they are the only known examples to have come on the market in the last 40 years or so. |
