1896 (16th March), RAILWAY TRAVELLING POST OFFICE / LATE FEE PAID envelope addressed to England. Bearing two ‘Halve Penny’ on 1/- green, four 1d rose-red and green and a single 6d pale dull blue (SG 213, 217, 210) all tied by fine strikes of the R.P.K. HEEN / Z.A.R. (16 Mar) double circle datestamp. London (6 Apr) arrival backstamp. Some unobtrusive crumpling and odd light stain. A scarce datestamp, franking and superb example of a combination of the TPO and Late Fee.

Note: R.P.K. HEEN = T.P.O. Down / away from headquarters. The 5d postage paid indicates a double weight 2½d per half ounce letter and the 6d adhesive paid the Late Fee surcharge.

Note: The Travelling Post Office consisted of a separate mail coach with post office staff and was coupled to NZASM operated trains.
