1890 (20th September), envelope addressed to England. Bearing a single Vurtheim 6d pale dull (SG 182) tied by a KRUGERSDORP Z.A.R. (20 Sep) truncated double circle datestamp with an additional strike alongside. Cape Town (24 Sep) transit and London (13 Oct) transit / arrival backstamps. The flap a little roughly opened and with printed ‘THE BATTERY REEF / GOLD MINING COMPANY, / LIMITED.’ A fine example of the 6d per half ounce rate to England in effect from the 1st October 1888 until 1st January 1891 when it was reduced to 4d per half ounce.
