1891 (13th March), long envelope (222x98mm) addressed to England with printed address ‘Luiperd’s Vlei Estate & Gold Mining Co., Ld.’ Bearing two vertical pairs of the ‘Vurtheim’ 2d olive-bistre (SG 178) tied by JOHANNESBURG / Z.A.R. (13 Mar) single circle datestamps. Endorsed ‘2’ in manuscript indicating the envelope was double weight. With Cape Town (19 Mar) squared circle transit and hooded London (13 Apr) arrival backstamps. A fine double weight example of the 4d per half ounce letter rate to England, a rate in effect from the 1st January 1891 until 1st December 1892 when it was reduced to 2½d per half ounce. |
