POSTAL HISTORY
T2855
1891 (13th June), long envelope (237x122mm) addressed to ‘The Gold Fields of South Africa Ltd.’, England. Bearing a block of four ‘Vurtheim’ 4d bronze-green (SG 181) tied by JOHANNESBURG / Z.A.R. (13 Jun) single circle datestamps. The weight of the envelope apparently exceeded the quadruple rate paid and received a ‘4D’ tax mark which was subsequently crossed through and a large ‘8D’ marking applied instead, indicating the envelope was actually a quintuple weight (up to 2½ ounces) and the 8d charge represents double the deficiency. With London (6 and 7 Jul) arrival datestamps on the front and reverse. Some vertical folds, otherwise a fine, underpaid quintuple weight example of the 4d per half ounce letter rate to England, a rate in effect from the 1st January 1891 until 1st December 1892 when it was reduced to 2½d per half ounce.
