1880 (May), Soldier’s concessionary rate cover to Scotland, bearing a single Queen Victoria 1d pale red-brown (SG 134) cancelled with ‘1’ target-type canceller and with proving PRETORIA / ZAR / ZUID AFRIKA single circle datestamp at left. Endorsed at top “From No. 982 Pte John R Minto” and countersigned at lower left by the Commanding Officer of the 2/21st Royal Scots Fusiliers. Backstamped with a very fine strike of the ‘Edinburgh & Carstairs Sorting Tender’ (4 July) datestamp. An attractive and very scarce example of the 1d soldier’s concession rate.
