1926-27 Pretoria Typo printings. 6d colour trial / plate proof, perf 15x14, printed in grey-black and red (unissued colours) on Springbok watermarked paper. Pair tied to part registered envelope by Johannesburg (24 JAN 29) double circle datestamps and with Johannesburg registration cachet below. These trials were illegally removed from the printing works and a few used on mail in 1929 to give the appearance they had been legitimately issued. Very scarce. With copies of contemporary articles.

Note: In August 1931, Philip Thomas Callard, a retired Government Printing Works official, pleaded guilty to being in possession of 240 ‘faked’ sixpenny stamps for which he was sentenced to four months imprisonment with hard labour and two months for other charges.
