1905 13th March, two page letter written on 'GOVERNMENT HOUSE, CAPE TOWN' notepaper. Written by Walter Hely-Hutchinson as Governor at the time, and addressed to one H.A. Miers, 'I hope you will stay with me from 15th - 19th August, whilst the British Assn is here'. Miers was Professor of Mineralogy at the University of Oxford, Magdalen College and did indeed stayed with the Governor during the tour. A most unusual survivor. |

Comprising the Invitation Circular for the 15th August, First Class ticket for the steamship Saxon, train tickets / passes, Lecture invitations, the Durban programme, passes for transport there, Invitation to the home of Sir Benjamin and Lady Greenacre, Pietermaritzburg invitations during 24th to 26th August, accommodation at the Rand Hotel, a delightful Concert programme still with attached miniature pencil, invitations whilst at Bloemfontein and Kimberley, invitations whilst at Bulawayo, then Salisbury and Umtali, arrangements for the stay in Beira plus menus for a dinner there, two envelopes, now rather battered, presumably delivering some of these. An extraordinary and no doubt unique group. |
