BA113 1905 13th March, two page letter written on 'GOVERNMENT HOUSE, CAPE TOWN' notepaper. Written by Walter Hely-Hutchinson as Governor at the time, and addressed to one H.A. Miers, 'I hope you will stay with me from 15th - 19th August, whilst the British Assn is here'. Miers was Professor of Mineralogy at the University of Oxford, Magdalen College and did indeed stayed with the Governor during the tour. A most unusual survivor. £325
BA112 1905 11th July, two page letter headed at top 'Foreign Office' with their Arms alongside. Addressed to 'My Dear Abercorn, I have spoken to Alfred Lyttelton upon the subject mentioned in your letter. He thinks it very unlikely that Selborne will be able to undertake the opening of the Victoria Falls Bridge'. A remarkable survivor. SOLD
BA1631 1905, an extraordinary group, apparently retained by one DR. D. Wilson, and being related items to the Association visit. Comprising the Invitation Circular for the 15th August, First Class ticket for the steamship Saxon, train tickets / passes, Lecture invitations, the Durban programme, passes for transport there, Invitation to the home of Sir Benjamin and Lady Greenacre, Pietermaritzburg invitations during 24th to 26th August, accommodation at the Rand Hotel, a delightful Concert programme still with attached miniature pencil, invitations whilst at Bloemfontein and Kimberley, invitations whilst at Bulawayo, then Salisbury and Umtali, arrangements for the stay in Beira plus menus for a dinner there, two envelopes, now rather battered, presumably delivering some of these. An extraordinary and no doubt unique group. £500

Addressed on one J. Starke Browne, Reception Room, City Hall. Presumably containing the various invitations etc. for the tour. A RARE STRIKE.
 
Note: James Starke Browne was a member of the Overseas Party. On the northward journey, he along with eleven others, decided to trek using Cape Carts (rather than the train), in order to visit the site of General Cronje's capture at Paardeberg. He later wrote a book 'Through South Africa with the British Association', an account of his entire tour.

BA114 1905 20th October, single page letter, embossed at upper right 'Newnham Grange, Cambridge.' Addressed to Mr. Pilling, and written by George Darwin 'Now that we (are) at home again it almost feels as if these crowded months are only an interesting dream'. Further thanking Pilling for all his services in making the trip work smoothly. Signed at base 'G H Darwin'. Together with envelope bearing somewhat mutilated GB KEVII 1d, addressed to Royal Observatory, Cape Town, arrival backstamp. An extraordinary survivor.
 
Note: Sir George Darwin was the second son of Charles Darwin. He was President of the British Association and in effect led the group to the Victoria Falls and the Opening of the Bridge there. The letter also refers to Sir William Wharton, who died of fever in Cape Town at the end of September, 1905.
