RA5809 1913 KGV watermark Crown CA, £10 purple and dull ultramarine. Very fine fresh mint. An exceptionally rare stamp. SG 99

This is the first example of this stamp we have handled. None were present in the sales of the 'McFarlane' or 'County' collections. The most recent example of SG 99 on the market we are aware of was offered on a US auction in December 2007, where it fetched $14,375, then the equivalent of about £7100.

Note: a fire destroyed the Government buildings in Zomba on the night of February 17th-18th, 1919, and it is believed the stock of £10 in the dull ultramarine colour (SG 99) was destroyed with it. The £10 issued to replace it in 1919 had the frame in 'Royal Blue' (SG 99a) and it is this colour that is usually encountered both mint and fiscally used.
