1917-20 Admiral Head Die IIIA, perf 14. 2/- deep black and yellow-brown. Lower right corner BLOCK OF FOUR very fine unmounted mint with characteristic brownish gum. Showing sheet number ‘27’ and endorsed ‘MPIKA 3/7/20’ in pencil on the reverse of the lower margin. An outstanding multiple and a great and unique Admiral rarity. Ex Gibbs, Besançon and Spivack. BPA Cert (2021). SG 255j
1/-, black and dull blue. Major variety IMPERFORATE BETWEEN, HORIZONTAL PAIR. Lower left corner proving strip of three, with the variety affection positions 52-53 from the sheet. Exceptionally fine mint. A MONUMENTAL RARITY OF THE ENTIRE RHODESIAN ERA. BPA certificate (2013). Ex. Calnan (1964), Spivack. SG 300a

Note: this variety would have affected one sheet, resulting is six such pairs possible. However, it would seem that only three such pairs have survived:

Upper marginal pair, tear between backed with a hinge, and with light toning in the margin. Ex. Gibbs (1988), Vestey (2014)

Left marginal strip of three, the right pair showing the variety. Centre stamp with small tear and some light colour run affecting both. Ex. Birkhead (1986), Baillie (2006)

The faults associated with both of these would suggest that the sheet was issued, and an attempt at separating. The other three possible pairs may well have not survived as no record exists. This corner strip may well be the sole surviving example in fine condition, and ideal in this positional format.

MA3570 1/-, black and dull blue.
