T1613 REVENUE / Cigarette Tax 189? Cigarette Box Tax Band (371mm x 30mm) with no quantity or duty specified. Perforated all round and with much original gum showing some rose-pink offset, presumably from a cigarette box. Printed in reddish lilac and pale grey-green with the ZAR Coat-of-Arms within a central circle with wording ‘BAND / VOOR / CIGARETTENDOOS / Z.A. REPUBLIEK’ in surrounding scrolls. Interestingly, ‘L.G.K. LITHO’ printed below the left scroll appears to indicate the name of the printer. Vertical folds as to be expected from affixing to the container, otherwise in remarkably fine condition. Apparently unrecorded in either Barefoot or the Transvaal Study Circle Revenue handbook. A large part example is illustrated in ‘Transvaal Philately’ (1986, page 269) as ‘Cigarette tax band of the Second ZAR’ though without any further explanatory text. A very rare survivor. £275
T1614 REVENUE / Cigar Tax 189? Cigar Tax Band (432mm x 48mm) for 25 cigars and showing a duty of 3/9. Imperforate on all sides and with most of the original gum. Printed in black and (very) deep carmine-red with the ZAR Coat-of-Arms within a central double circle surrounded by wording ‘BAND VOOR SIGARENKIST / Z.A. REPUBLIEK’ with ‘25 / SIGAREN’ to the left and ‘3/9’ to the right. Vertical folds as to be expected from affixing to the container and a few areas of surface scuffing, otherwise in remarkably fine condition. This issue appears to be utilising the same delicate surfaced paper as employed for the Customs Permit £1 duty believed to have been issued around 1899. Apparently unrecorded in either Barefoot or the Transvaal Study Circle Revenue handbook. A very rare survivor. £325

Printed in black on cream paper with the ZAR Coat-of-Arms within a central double circle surrounded by wording ‘BAND VOOR SIGARENKIST / Z.A. REPUBLIEK’ with ‘50 / SIGAREN’ to the left and ‘7/6’ to the right. The text at the far ends of the band run in the opposite direction to that on the 3/9 and 15/- bands from the same issue. Vertical folds as to be expected from affixing to the container otherwise in remarkably fine condition. Apparently unrecorded in either Barefoot or the Transvaal Study Circle Revenue handbook. T2457 REVENUE 1901 (1st October), De La Rue folded Appendix sheet (194x307mm) with heading ‘1st October 1901. / Transvaal Req. 90/1900 / Appendix B. / Revenue.’ Bearing seven KEVII bicoloured imperforate revenue colour trials on Crown CC watermarked paper and denominated ‘2s6d’, six of which are in the issued colours (2/6, 10/-, £1, £5, £10 and £25) with the proposed duty for each annotated in manuscript above. The proposed colour for the 5/- was not accepted and has been crossed through and “See Appendix F” written alongside. T2435 REVENUE 1902 KEVII 1/- to £25 set of nine, the original De La Rue File copies, each with ‘SPECIMEN’ overprint (Samuel Type D9 in red on the 1s and 2s or Type D12 in black on the 2s6d to £25). Each is affixed to a small piece of archive paper, the 2s6d with manuscript annotation ‘120 set key + ovpts / 1/- + 2/-’, indicating the sheet size for the 1/- and 2/- duties was doubled to 120, which are each dated ‘Sep 02’. A magnificent and unique set. Ex De La Rue archives and illustrated in ‘The De La Rue Collection’ p.8313. £5,250
T2436 REVENUE 1902-1906 KEVII complete set of all nine duties, 1/- to £25, comprising a complete set of six of the 1906 issue on watermark multiple Crown CA paper (1/-, 2/-, 2/6, 5/-, £1, £25) and the balance (10/-, £5 and £10) on the earlier 1902 issue on watermark Crown CC paper. Each an upper or lower marginal example handstamped ‘SPECIMEN’ (Samuel type SA5) for presentation to the Royal Empire Society in 1910. All are fresh mint with light hinge remnants. UNIQUE, with only one set of postage and revenue stamps of each Colony being prepared for the visit. A magnificent set.

T2461 REVENUE 1902 (22nd December), printed page (190x309mm) headed ‘Deed of Transfer’. Bearing KEVII 5/- and £1 revenue stamps (watermark Crown CC) tied by REGISTRAR OF DEEDS (22 12 1902) crowned oval datestamps. The value of the transaction is given as £4000. Bearing a single KEVII 5/- dull purple and greenish black revenue stamp tied by a large oval ‘OFFICE of the REGISTRAR of BIRTHS, DEATHS & MARRIAGES / PRETORIA / 12 JAN. 1907 / TRANSVAAL’ struck in violet. The adhesive also with manuscript cancellation. A most unusual usage (previously displayed next to the blasting certificate). £250
